Org. Setting and Reporting
These positions are located primarily in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the Regional Commissions. The young professionals programme examination in Statistics covers a wide range of topics in the areas of probability theory, descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, demographic and social statistics or economic statistics. The Associate Statistician typically reports to the head of a unit or to a senior Statistician.

Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Associate Statistician will be responsible for the following duties: (These duties are generic and may not be carried out by all Associate Statisticians.) • Participate in the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation and dissemination of statistical data from Member States by selecting methods of data collection, selecting and implementing methods for validating collected data, and selecting and implementing appropriate methods for data processing for incorporation into statistical database(s); • Participate in the development, implementation and management of statistical database(s) and outputs in a particular area of statistics such as economic statistics and national accounts, trade statistics, environment, energy and industrial statistics, demographic and social statistics, etc.; • Participate in the design and delivery of statistical capacity development activities, including technical assistance and training; • Contribute to the development and application of standards for data and metadata exchange for use in different areas of statistics; • Conduct methodological research, analyze and present information gathered from various data sources on assigned topics; • Participate in the development and harmonization of appropriate methods and standards for measuring the performance in different areas of statistics, including development and revision of statistical concepts, definitions and classifications; • Maintain close liaison and cooperation with relevant national and international institutions’ statistical experts; • Organize and participate in seminars, working groups, expert meetings and task teams as a technical resource person; • Contribute to the preparation of draft technical documents for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings and other relevant reports; • Guide, train and supervise general service staff.

Education
At least a first-level university degree in one of the following fields of study: 1. Fields of study: Actuarial Science, Applied Mathematics, Logic, Mathematics, Numerical Analysis, Operations Research, Statistics (These fields of studies can be found under the main course of study “Mathematics and Statistics”.) 2. Fields of study: Demography, Econometrics, Economics, Sociology (These fields of studies can be found under the main course of study “Social and Behavioural Science”.)

Work Experience
No experience is required.

Languages
Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French (both oral and written) is required: knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Lowongan Kerja di PBB, Telah Dibuka

Pada tahun 2012, melalui skema YPP, Sekretariat PBB mengundang sejumlah negara tertentu agar warga negaranya melamar untuk bekerja pada PBB. Negara yang diundang adalah negara yang warga negaranya belum banyak menjadi staf pada kantor sekretariat PBB, termasuk warga negara Indonesia (WNI). Pada tahun 2013 ini, WN Indonesia sekali lagi diundang untuk berpartisipasi dalam YPP. Di dalam YPP, pelamar tidak diharuskan memiliki previous working experience (padahal kalau melamar dengan jalur biasa, PBB biasanya meminta pengalaman kerja minimal 5 tahun). Lowongan kerja yang terbuka pada tahun 2013 ini adalah di bidang: administrasi, keuangan, informasi publik, hukum, dan statistik.
Persyaratan yang harus dipenuhi pelamar: 
  • Memiliki ijazah minimal S1 sesuai bidang kerja yang ditawarkan.
  • Lancar berbahasa Inggris secara lisan dan tulisan.
  • Kemampuan berbahasa PBB lainnya (Perancis, Spanyol, Rusia, Arab, Cina) menjadi nilai tambah 
  • Belum berusia 32 tahun pada tanggal 3 Desember 2013
  • Pelamar tidak diharuskan memiliki pengalaman kerja.

Lamaran melalui online tersebut akan diseleksi oleh kantor PBB (seleksi tahap 1). Pelamar yang lolos seleksi ini, harus mengikuti ujian tertulis (seleksi tahap 2). Ujian tertulis akan diadakan di Jakarta hanya kalau terdapat sekurangnya 15 WNI yang lolos dari tahap seleksi administrasi. WNI dapat pula memilih mengikuti ujian tertulis di negara lain (dengan biaya sendiri). Apabila kurang dari 15 orang yang lolos seleksi administrasi, maka peserta yang lolos akan dipersilahkan mengikuti ujian tertulis di negara lain yang terdekat (dengan biaya sendiri).

Pendaftaran online mulai dibuka tanggal 3 Juni 2013 sampai dengan 1 Agustus 2013 untuk lowongan di bidang Administrasi, Keuangan, dan Informasi Publik. Sedangkan untuk lowongan di bidang Hukum dan Statistik, pendaftaran online dibuka mulai tanggal 8 Juli 2013 sampai dengan 5 September 2013. Ujian tertulis rencananya akan dilaksanakan pada tanggal 3 Desember 2013 serentak di seluruh dunia agar tidak terjadi kebocoran soal ujian.

Sebagai informasi, berdasarkan pengalaman tahun lalu (2012), melalui lamaran secara online, telah terjaring 407 WNI di seluruh dunia. Dari jumlah tersebut, kurang lebih 100-an orang WNI memilih mengikuti ujian tertulis di Jakarta. Oleh karena itu, Kementerian Luar Negeri bekerja sama dengan PBB, telah mengadakan ujian tertulis di gedung Carakaloka (milik Kementerian Luar Negeri), di Jl. Sisingamangaraja, Jakarta Selatan. Ujian tertulis ini dilakukan serentak di seluruh dunia. Di Jakarta, ujian dilaksanakan mulai jam 5 sore sampai 9 malam. Peserta yang lolos ujian tertulis, diundang untuk mengikuti proses seleksi selanjutnya (tahap 3) berupa wawancara, yang dilaksanakan di Bangkok. Biaya perjalanan dan akomodasi ditanggung PBB.
